One Comparative Data Expert position in GESIS Cologne (with PhD)

GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences is an internationally active institute belonging to the Leibniz Association, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal States.

The department ‘Data Archive for the Social Sciences’ in Cologne is acquires domestic and international comparative surveys on sociological and political science topics. The surveys are processed in accordance with internationally recognized standards, archived and made available for the scientific public. For its International Data Infrastructures Team the depart-ment is seeking to employ for the GESIS’ site in Cologne:

A Comparative Data Expert
(Full time, compensation according to TV-L 13)

The Job
The analysis of economic positions, social structures, educational status, or attitudes in a comparative perspective often requires harmonizing data from heterogeneous sources. This position, building on prior work, will contribute to better data harmonization processes in the European research environment by conceptualizing and coordinating two major projects:

1. Concepts, Conversions, Classifications Database: A system designed to make existing routines and knowledge on harmonization of variables more transparent and more widely available
and
2. A question database: A database designed to offer access to survey question texts and question metadata, and to survey results connected to specific questions.

The person
For this position we need a person with a PhD in the social sciences, from a relevant field such as politics, sociology, or economics. This person needs to have a wide experience with usage and manipulation of various comparative data sources and surveys and ideally have a good knowledge of common classifications, scales, and indices. Desired is an understanding of the value of documentation and data management routines as well as metadata standards.

Knowledge of German is desirable but not necessary, with the expectation that sufficient working knowledge of the German language will be acquired shortly thereafter.

The initial appointment will be for two years, starting as soon as possible.
